Join this event in which we will watch an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war.

For Human Rights Day 2024, in collaboration with The Hague Humanity Hub, we are presenting the critically acclaimed film For Sama. This event is part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series, a program that uses film and storytelling to bring important issues around peace and justice to the attention of a wide audience. After the film screening, we will engage in a discussion with experts on topics such as the context of the Syrian conflict during the shooting of the film, the current humanitarian and refugee crisis in Syria, and the political situation in the Netherlands, including cabinet plans to declare parts of Syria safe and return Syrian asylum seekers. 

About the movie

FOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
