Expert Meeting on the Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC (part 2)
Following the conversation on the 6th of March this year, KUNO organises this meeting to take stock of the challenges in responding to the humanitarian needs in the region.
Since the rapid offensive by M23 rebels and the seizure of Goma and Bukavu, the Eastern DRC is experiencing a severe, escalated humanitarian crisis. UNHCR reports that some million people are estimated to be displaced in North and South Kivu. Sexual and gender-based violence has surged alarmingly. Critical funding gaps are severely hindering humanitarian efforts in eastern DRC. Thousands are deprived of life-saving aid, protection efforts are under immense strain, and malnutrition cases have escalated. Health centers are overwhelmed, increasing the risk of outbreaks of diseases. The Congolese government and M23 have both just pledged to commit to work towards peace, although it remains unclear what this directly means for the support of the affected people.
