Environmental Responsibility in Humanitarian Operations

Humanitarian organizations are currently under growing pressure to minimize their environmental footprint. The current "triple planetary crisis" —comprising climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss— is undermining the foundations of sustainable development and human well-being, intensifying conflicts, and driving humanitarian needs.

This webinar took place in February 2024, shortly after the release of the IASC Guidance on Environmental Responsibility in Humanitarian Operations. This guidance explains the significance of environmental responsibility in humanitarian efforts and outlines important environmental management practices and approaches that help to address a humanitarian organisation’s environmental impact.

The webinar addresses how humanitarian organisations are incorporating environmental management approaches within their operations and adapting their delivery models to become more sustainable (e.g. minimising waste).
