About University of Twente: Center for Disaster Resilience
We direct special attention to three societal themes and the challenges they pose, framed in a single question: How can we contribute to the development of a fair, sustainable and digital society between now and 2030?
Engineering for sustainable community development provides an approach for engineers to cooperatively work with people on location to identify needs and resources, develop technology solutions, and assess impact.
Trying to get close to the established and challenging target zero poverty does require both engineers with specific multidisciplinary skills and researchers that are able to analyse the basic problems of areas affected by crisis and offer valuable but simple and efficient solutions. Therefore, we want to become the reference point in Europe for both research and educational aspects of Humanitarian Engineering.
The faculties
The Faculty of BMS is the home of social scientists eager to make the world a better place bringing people and tech together in innovative, responsible and value-creating ways, we help them both become better versions of themselves.
The Faculty of Engineering Technology envisions a world in which engineering innovations are developed with one single purpose: to serve humanity. This is translated also in the direction of more vulnerable and underserved communities with the group of Humanitarian Engineering.
The Faculty of Geo-information and Earth-Observation is engaged worldwide (but especially in the Global South) in realising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in food security and agriculture, energy transition, geo-health, climate change adaptation, urban development and smart cities, disaster risk reduction, and land administration. The Centre for Disaster Resilience (CDR) focusses on a synergetic and common effort to increase the well-being and the global sustainable growth by significantly decreasing disaster risk. We do this through fundamental, interdisciplinary and applied research, dissemination, education and training, international cooperation, and advisory services.
